What is a VMC Certificate?
A Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) is a digital certificate issued by a trusted Certificate Authority (CA) that enables organizations to display their registered logo in the sender field of supported email clients. This enhances brand recognition and trust by ensuring recipients see a verified brand logo when receiving emails.
How VMC Works
VMC leverages the BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) standard, which allows email clients to display brand logos for authenticated messages. To use a VMC, an organization must:
- Authenticate its email using DMARC at enforcement (p=quarantine or p=reject).
- Host an SVG version of the logo meeting BIMI specifications.
- Obtain a VMC from a trusted CA.
How to Get a VMC Certificate
To acquire a VMC, an organization must:
- Ensure DMARC Compliance: The domain must have a DMARC record with a policy of quarantine or reject.
- Obtain a Trademarked Logo: The logo must be officially registered with a trademark office.
- Purchase a VMC: VMCs can be obtained from a verified Certificate Authority (CA) such as DigiCert.
- Validate Organization and Logo Ownership: The CA will verify the organization’s identity and ownership of the trademarked logo.
- Implement the BIMI Record: Once issued, the VMC is used in the domain’s DNS BIMI record.
What Needs to Be Done After Purchasing a VMC
After obtaining a VMC, organizations must update their DNS records and ensure the certificate is correctly reflected for their domain. Additionally, they should maintain DMARC compliance and verify that their logo appears correctly in supported email clients.
